Using a qualitative approach to connect homes and classrooms we form part of a collaborative project between education and anthropology that is studying household and classroom practices within working class mexican communities in tucson arizona. The funds of knowledge approach builds on a social development and learning theory arguing for an acknowledgement of children s home and community experiences and exploring how teachers and schools may use these funds of knowledge to help individual children to create personalised ways of knowing. The authors define the key term funds of knowledge as the skills and knowledge that have been historically and culturally developed to enable an individual or household to function within a given culture and argue that integrating funds of knowledge into classroom activities creates a richer and more highly scaffolded learning experience for students.
